At the base of the rock, you’ll find Sigiriya’s intricate gardens, one of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. These ancient royal gardens feature water gardens, rock gardens, and terraced gardens. As you walk through, you'll encounter symmetrical pools, fountains, and meandering pathways that once provided leisure for royalty. The garden’s engineering marvels, like the water fountains that still function during the rainy season, speak volumes about the advanced hydraulic systems used by ancient Sri Lankan kings. 

The ascent to the summit of Sigiriya is a journey in itself. The climb involves over 1,200 steps, but don’t be daunted, there are plenty of places to rest and enjoy the scenery along the way. As you make your way up, you’ll pass through narrow stairways, platforms, and tunnels, each offering a unique perspective of the surroundings. One of the most fascinating features along the climb is the Mirror Wall, a polished surface where ancient scribes inscribed graffiti and poetry, much of which can still be seen today. 

One important thing to note during the climb is the presence of wasp hives built on the sides of the rock. If disturbed, the wasps may attack. In such situations, protective cages have been installed near the lion’s paw (about halfway up the climb). However, if the cages are not within reach, it is advised to lie down until the danger has passed.  

Sigiriya is also known for its stunning frescoes, which are among the best-preserved examples of ancient Sri Lankan art. Painted on the western face of the rock, these frescoes depict beautiful maidens believed to be the attendants of King Kashyapa, who once ruled Sigiriya. The vibrant colors and delicate details of these paintings offer insight into the artistic skills of the ancient kingdom. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with the ruins of what was once a magnificent royal palace. The foundations of buildings, walls, and water ponds offer a glimpse of King Kashyapa's reign. From the palace grounds to the remnants of the palace buildings and the large pool carved from the rock, the brilliance of this ancient civilization is evident in every detail.

The view from the top of Sigiriya is nothing short of spectacular. You’ll be able to see the lush greenery of the surrounding plains, dense forests, and distant mountains. On a clear day, the panoramic views stretch as far as the eye can see, making the challenging climb more than worth it. It’s easy to understand why King Kashyapa chose this spot as his stronghold because it offers both natural beauty and strategic advantage.
